General characterisation of the Faculty and its study programmes
The Faculty of Education UP in Olomouc offers the option of studying in three types of study programmes– Bachelor, Master’s and Doctoral programmes, in full-time and combined forms. Applicants with completed secondary education with school leaving exam are offered the Bachelor and Master’s study programmes.
The Faculty of Education offers a broad range of programmes and fields of study in full-time and combined forms of study, while in 2010 a process of restructuring the Master’s fields of study to Bachelor and post-Bachelor Master’s fields was also commenced. The Accreditation Committee of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports made a positive assessment of the programmes and fields of study structure, and extended their accreditation until 2016. In 2010, The Faculty of Education also achieved significant expansion in their offer of combined form of study, in programmes such as Specialisation in Education (a Bachelor level of pregradual teachers’ training), changes to the structure of the Faculty of Education students, non-teaching fields of study were restricted and teaching fields of study were reinforced. In 2010, a Doctoral programme of study Specialisation in Education with a field of study Music Theory and Education was accredited.
Bachelor study is a single or two-field study with a 3-year standard duration. It is concluded with a final Bachelor’s examination, which also includes defence of a Bachelor’s thesis. The Bachelor study graduates are issued a diploma, a certificate of a Bachelor’s examination, and they are awarded the academic degree of “Bachelor” (abbreviated as Bc.).
The Bachelor’s study programme Specialisation in Education offers such fields of study that provide the possibility of continuation in a post-Bachelor Master’s study programme (designed as preliminary level for the post-Bachelor Masters study). The post-Bachelor Master’s study (abbreviated as NMgr) spans 2 or 3 years and provides the option of acquiring complete university teaching qualification.
The Master’s study is a single or two-field study programme spanning 4, 5 or 6 years of standard study duration. Master’s study as well as the post-Bachelor Master’s study is concluded with a final state examination, which also includes the defence of a Thesis. The successful candidates of the Master’s and post-Bachelor Master’s study programme are issued a diploma and a diploma supplement, and they are awarded the academic degree of “Master” (abbreviated as Mgr.).
Doctoral study (PhD)
The Doctoral study programme focuses on scientific research and independent creative activity in the area of research or development. Studies in the Doctoral study programme run according to an individual study plan under the expert guidance of a supervisor. The study abides by the respective provisions of Act no. 111/1998 of the Coll. on universities, and furthermore, by the internal standards of UP and the Faculty of Education UP see below. The studies encompass, in accordance with the said law, a period of three or four years. The studies are conducted in full-time and/or combined forms (previously as full-time or part-time study only). Students in the full-time form of study receive scholarship and they have the option of availing the services of a canteen and the accommodation facilities of UP.
The studies are duly concluded with a Dissertation, which is preceded by a state doctoral examination. A student (graduate) thereby demonstrates his/her readiness for independent activities in the fields of research or development. Graduates from the Doctoral study programmes are awarded the academic degree of “Doctor” (abbreviated as “PhD”, appended to the name).
Students with a handicap can also study at the faculty as it offers barrier free access and consulting services for students with specific needs.
The Bachelor, Master’s and Doctoral study programmes apply the ECTS credit system. The Palacky University also has an international award - the Diploma Supplement Label.
